Prologue
“Nooooooooooooooo!” screamed Rue, “They can’t!” she sobbed. “I want Jonathan. I… he was a …a... friend to me.” “Hush Rue,” we will save him. Poor little Rue, why did she have to go through this. And Jonathan, yes, Jonathan. I wondered what he was thinking about.
A sudden defiance came to me. I hated the government. They did this. They took him away. I knew it was a unkeepable promise, but I told Rue. “We will break him out tonight, and we can bring Ethan with us. “
”But Liza, we can’t.” Rue pleaded.
“Maybe not, but we have to try.” The edge in my voice came from an anger deep inside that I didn’t know I had.
Chapter Ⅰ
Breakout
The programmed weather outside was cold and bleary, fitting the occasion. “Rue, ” I whispered, “I’m scared , I didn’t want to admit it but I am. ’’ “Me too. ” said Rue, shivering. We walked to the center of our settlement E*3%.The exterior of the government agency building was humongous. My house was like a closet compared to it.
“Savior save me.” prayed Rue. “Don’t. Don’t pray to him! He is a cheater and a faker,” I lectured. “All he wants is money. His plan is working, don’t let it” Breathing deeply I checked the door. It was unlocked. “I don’t like the feeling of this,” whispered Rue and we ventured in. “It’s a trap.” I decided. “But we have to do it.”
She ran through the open door at the end of the room marked cell and died just like that. The moment was overwhelming and horrible. Just horrible. There had been a loud crunch and she was gone.
For the first time on our little expedition I really noticed Ethan. It’s like he’d disappeared. Uncomfortably he said “I think I know a way in.” For some reason at the time I thought that would be a perfectly normal thing to say.
He led me over to a receptionist desk. He typed a few things, smiled and said “Hacked. we’re now spokesman for infini-food.” “How’d you do that?’ I demanded to know. “A boy has gotta keep some secrets”he said mysteriously.
”Shut up.” I said. In my mind I thought about why he was
He is not our Savior. Or anyone else’s. He’s just a liar and phony.” I scolded. being so strange. I didn’t know. We trotted back over to the open doors. Ethan murmured “here I go.”Crunch it happened all over again. But this time I smiled. He didn’t deserve to live.
I pondered in my mind how that traitor had been able to hack the system, and when he failed was that an accident. Who knows?I peeked my head through the doorway . Thankfully it didn’t get cut in half. I made a mental note that the trap was pressure plates or something, not motion sensors. I looked over a white hallway. White doors, white walls, white floors, and white bones. “Okay, a little creepy,” I murmured. But what gave me hope to keep on going was that on one of the white signs next to a white door was, in a neat scrawl,
Jonathan Wrighthalk
I resisted the urge to shout his name. There could be guards and I don’t want to meet them. Though I hadn’t seen any sign of people. “Okay ,“ I told myself. “time for action.” in a supply closet I found a thin sheet of hammered metal. “ I hope this isn’t suicide.” I grimly told myself. I laid the thin sheet of metal across the floor in the doorway. i was so scared. But I did it, and nothing happened.
“This is wrong” I told myself “Very wrong.” I stepped into the room with Jonathan’s name on it, and was horrified by what i saw. Three guards had there infini-guns pointed right at my heart. One shot. that’s all it would take to end my life. for infini-death workers it was just more paperwork to fill out. but for me, my family , and my friends it is a horrific event that would be grieved. I hope they’d grieve about it i thought.
I saw my life flash before me. My birth, Rue, oh yes Rue. I remembered my seventh birthday party the one where my finger became burned. I still have the scar. I see horrible events, like that night two years ago.
I will never forget it mother and father fighting. over credit, rue and I, life. I had been so scared they were going to… I shuddered, divorce. Rue had cried, cried so hard . I’d tried to comfort her, not able to comfort myself.
I saw my future too. Events that will probably never happen. a tall light grey eyed person, with flowing brown hair kissing, kissing a taller, more dignified version of Jonathan. me again in an elegant dress bringing out my slender features. I was holding a plump little baby named Tobias. but all this happened in a split second, and came back to reality. What could I do? I didn’t need to do anything. Jonathan came to my rescue. Oh I would have hugged him that moment if he wasn’t Infini-cuffed to a table and in a full body cast. He lept as far as the cuffs would let him. Struggling he yanked a gun from a guard and shot them all. I was what you’d call in awe. “We have to get you out of those handcuffs, but I don’t know how. There is no Infini-lock hole. Are they magnetic?’’ “No, electronic. When they put me in these stupid things a guard pressed something on his Infini-tech screen. Sure enough in the pocket of the largest guard was a screen in foldup mode. “uggghhh! What do you think is the password.” I said. Jonathan answered with “The goon’s so stupid he uses a talk ® password. It’s bunny. Once we’d unlocked it we found under the notifications TAB what we were looking for. There was a button that said lock/unlock inmate 322’s handcuffs. Jonathan rubbed his wrists to get the circulation back in them. “ Now we have to leave before morning.” said Jonathan.” “Too late. Look out the window.” I panicked.” “Oh no. This is bad, very bad.
We ran. Well I half walked, half drag Jonathan. But it was fast. Don’t judge me. We fast walked/limped for what seemed like forever. Then we heard the shooting. I went unconscious, and Jonathan did too. But later mother recapped to us what the Infini-workers told her. The probably revised government version of the story was that there was a whole misconception with us being kidnapped. Apparently it was just pure chaos and nobody knew what they were doing.
Chapter Ⅱ
Escape
One of them came to talk to me, and it wasn’t small talk. With a cold stare he spat at me “Do not, I repeat do NOT do it again. If you do, (he made a motion of cutting his head off ) certain death. “Do you know how much danger you just put your settlement in?” “From what?” I asked. This flustered him. “Eliza I’m leaving now.” He brought back his dignified looks and left the room. He turned back “ We’re always watching.” Okay now that unnerved me.
I started running to Rue’s bedroom, but turned back when I remembered she’s dead. I wiped away a tear. Usually I’m good at hiding my emotions but now I find no reason. Rue is dead, I replay in my mind. It’s just too bad, and I can’t wrap my mind around it.
So instead of talking to Rue I went to Jonathan’s Infini-home. One of the reasons Jonathan is my best friend is he live down the street from me, so we've seen each other for as long as I can remember. I knocked on his front door and he came. He looked at me and said "We have to leave.""I know." I said. Though I only then accepted it. I wanted to wish my mother farewell but she would never accept it. We planned to leave at 11:00. I didn't know where we were going to go, but Jonathan seemed to have a plan. I went to my room to pack my few belongings. I thought about bringing one of Rue's things. No it would just make me feel horrible. I feel horrible anyway. Horrible ending right. Don't worry . More coming out soon! :)
